No one ever forgets their first Olympic Games in their home country. In Canada, the torch will be lit for a third time on our land, this time to blaze against a stunning backdrop of snow-capped coastal mountains and the thundering surf of the Pacific Ocean as Vancouver welcomes the world to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It’s already been a long road to Olympic glory for organizers.
In the 1960s, the Vancouver—Whistler region began its quest to host the Olympic Winter Games.

In 1970, the region was accepted as a finalist to host the 1976 Olympic Winter Games, which were eventually staged by Innsbruck, Austria.
In 1998, the Canadian Olympic Committee selected Vancouver to present Canada’s bid for the 2010 Winter Games. On July 2, 2003, members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), at their 115th Session in Prague, selected Vancouver as the Host City of the 2010 Winter Games from a field of three cities that included Salzburg, Austria and PyeongChang, South Korea.
The drama of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games will unfold in Vancouver, Whistler, Richmond and West Vancouver February 12–28, 2010. The following month, March 12 –21, 2010 Vancouver and Whistler will host the Paralympic Winter Games.
So once again, Canada has earned the honour to welcome the world to our beautiful country. Make your plans to travel the most scenic road to the Olympics—the historic Yellowhead Highway.
The Olympic Opening Ceremony will take place on February 12, 2010 and the Olympic Closing Ceremony February 28, 2010, both at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium.
